Education Outreach

The AEC Conference on Southern Literature has become well-known for bringing hundreds of readers and writers together to celebrate literature in Chattanooga. During the Conference, AEC reaches an additional 7,000 people through the community outreach programs: Young Southern Student Writers, Classroom Residencies and the Creative Writing Workshop for teachers.

Young Southern Student Writers
Students in grades K-12 enter their prose and poetry in this annual writing competition, judged by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga English Department. Over 5,000 students entered the 2011 contest. Winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at the Tivoli Theatre on April 12, 2011.

Classroom Residencies
During the 2011 Conference, 19 writers will visit 21 local high schools. Students received a copy of the writer's book in advance to prepare for the author visit.

Creative Writing Workshop for Teachers
Hamilton County language arts teachers are invited to work with award winning Conference writers to explore new ways to teach and encourage creative writing in the classroom. The 2011 workshop will be April 13, from 8 AM to 2 PM. Instructors are Andrew Hudgins, Jill McCorkle and Allen Wier.
